Tips

There are several ways to improve your Bimini Twist knot tying technique - a few of which are outlined here.  First, while forming the initial loop, be sure to keep a tag end that is plenty long.  You'll want to cinch the initial twists down to keep the knot from slipping.  Another useful tip is to moisten the knot when the twists start to tighten - this will allow it to cinch down tighter, resulting in a stronger knot.  Finish your knot with a half hitch around both legs of the bimini, this leaves you with a cleaner finished knot.  The FG knot is another good option for connecting your double line to your leader.

When to Use a Bimini Knot

Once you know how to tie a bimini twist knot, you'll want to determine when to use it.  This popular saltwater fishing knot can be used when offshore fishing, to create a double line for attaching main line to leader.

Uses of a Bimini Twist Knot

This knot is used to create a strong loop that is used as a double-line leader on the end of a fishing line. This can then be used for a loop-to-loop connection.  You can also use the Bimini Twist to join a swivel, be it ball bearing, snap, barrel, crane, or other.  It's also a helpful knot to use when creating the double line for a Yucatan knot.  The Bimini knot can be used to attach wind on leaders, or complete tarpon leaders of maximum tippet strength.  You can use this knot to form a nice light tackle line to leader connection, in conjunction with the Bristol knot - this set-up is great for jigging, casting, and free lining baits.

Advantages

The Bimini Twist Fishing Knot is rated as a 100% knot - meaning, that when you tie it properly, it retains all of its original line strength.  For example, a Bimini tied in 80lb mono would retain 80lbs of breaking strength.  Another important advantage is that this knot runs smoothly through your rod guides.
